How to get to Punta Allen on your own?
First, you can go to the village on your own by car or by public bus for a self-guided tour.
Is it possible to reach Punta Allen by car?
That’s the question everyone is asking. What do we think of it? Is there any risk for the car? How is the road condition? … If you really want to, you can drive to Punta Allen, but at your own risk.
How long does it take tor each Punta Allen by car?
You will need 2 hours 45 minutes from Cancun, 1 hour 40 minutes from Playa Del Carmen and 30 minutes from downtown Tulum to drive to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. Once you arrive at the entrance to the biosphere, you will find a dirt track that leads to Punta Allen.
Then you will need to drive 2 hour from the entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere to get to the village in off-roads conditions. The distance is only 42 kilometers (26 miles) but the average speed is about 20 km/h (13 mi/h). The reason for such a long travel time is that you will face a rough and very long dirt track.
Can I go to Punta Allen by rental car?
Before going to Punta Allen with a rental car, you have to ask the rental company if they allow you to go there. Indeed, most rental companies in the area forbid you to go to Sian Ka’an with their vehicles. It’s difficult for them to check if you are going to Sian Ka’an, but if you try and get stuck there or break anything on the car (as the suspensions…), the insurance will not cover these damages and you will have to pay to fix the car.
If you plan to go by car, check with the rental company and rent an SUV with all-wheel-drive, with solid suspensions and suitable for these road conditions.
Punta Allen by colectivo
An inexpensive option to get to Punta Allen is to take the Colectivos. This is a very well-known public transport system in Mexico: minivans that stop on request on a given route.
There is a line from Tulum to Punta Allen. A single daily connection with schedules for workers using it everyday. The journey takes about four hours. The fare is MXN 200 Pesos or $10 USD one way. Here are the timetables:
- Punta Allen to Tulum: departure at 8:00 a.m.
- Tulum to Punta Allen: departure at 4:00 p.m.
Tour to Punta Allen
The most comfortable option to get to the village is undoubtedly to book a day trip from Playa Del Carmen or Tulum with a tour agency. Once again, be careful that the excursion is a Punta Allen tour and not Muyil.
Prices for a day trip to Punta Allen range from $100 USD to over $180 USD. The price varies depending on where you will board the boat.
