You found out how to get to Sian Ka’an with our previous article and decided to visit Muyil… Excellent choice!
I will endeavor to guide you through the different opportunities available for touring Muyil.
How to get to Muyil on your own?
It is easy to visit Muyil from Tulum or Playa Del Carmen. The archaeological zone of Muyil is the gateway to the Sian Ka’an reserve on the northwest side.
Muyil is located a 20-minute drive from Tulum and a 1.5-hour drive from Playa Del Carmen.
The road to go to Muyil is in good condition, there isn’t a long dirt track like to go to Punta Allen before starting to enjoy the nature reserve.
Even if the area of Punta Allen is the most attractive for its fauna, flora and landscapes, Muyil remains a good option, and is really much easier to access for a self guided-tour.
🚗 How to reach Muyil by car?
Head southwest for a 20-minute drive on Highway 307 towards Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
The distance between Tulum and Muyil is 24 kilometers (15 miles).
Once there, turn on the left and you will find a parking lot off the road and a ticket counter at the entrance to the Muyil area.
How to reach Muyil by rental car?
Unlike the other area, Muyil is easy to access and the road to get to the entrance is paved and in very good condition.
Indeed, it’s the main road that connects Tulum and the capital of Quintana Roo Chetumal.
If you rent a car for your vacation in the Riviera Maya, you can easily go to Muyil for an afternoon. But don’t rent a car only to go to Muyil.
You will see that you can get there by public transportation for cheap!
👉 I recommend you the America Car Rental company, which is highly renowned in the area.
🚐 How to get to Muyil by colectivo?
This is the very inexpensive option to reach the Muyil area. “Colectivos” are minivans that can stop on request on a given route.
There is a Tulum – Felipe Carrillo Puerto line that goes through Muyil for around 40 pesos MXN per person.
You can take the Colectivo here, on the main avenue of Tulum in front of the ADO bus station. There is a bus about every 30 minutes.
You can pay the ride directly to the driver. When you get on the bus, tell the driver that you want to get off at Muyil.
🚕 How to get to Muyil by taxi?
Of course, it’s possible to get to Muyil by taxi. However, it won’t be the most economical option… especially in the Tulum area, where taxi drivers tend to inflate prices.
Expect to pay between 400 and 600 Pesos MXN for this trip from downtown Tulum.
🛵 Can I get to Muyil by scooter ?
Riding a scooter will roughly take you a minimum of 30 minutes.
The route is pleasantly paved, but it’s essentially a two-lane highway.
This means that cars and even large trucks often pass through, sometimes requiring oncoming traffic to shift aside – which is where you’ll be riding.
While it’s feasible to travel this way, there’s some risk involved since you won’t be able to match the speed of other vehicles.
However, it’s worth noting that many people use various modes of transportation on this road for their daily commute, so you won’t be alone in this.
👉 I recommend you the company Tulum Scooter Services.
Is Uber available in Tulum ?
❌ Uber is not operating in the area at the moment.
Guided tours to Muyil
Several excursion agencies offer all-inclusive tours, either meeting on-site or with a pick-up from your hotel.
The classic Muyil tour is a half-day excursion that includes a visit to the Muyil archaeological site, a walk in the jungle, exploring the 3 lagoons, and a floating activity in the famous Lazy River.
Prices range from $110 USD to $160 USD depending on the package and the agency.
Indeed, you will find two options:
- Classic Muyil Tour: This is the tour that allows you to visit the Muyil ruins, walk the jungle trail, climb to the top of the tower, take a boat tour of the mangroves, and participate in the floating activity. This is the most popular and most requested option.
- Extended Muyil Tour: This tour includes all the activities of the “classic” tour, but the boat tour lasts about 5 hours instead of 1.5 hours! In addition to the mangroves and floating, you will go to Boca Paila to see crocodiles and snorkel on the sea side. However, please note that this tour does not include Punta Allen, dolphins, or turtles.
🐦 Another activity offered in the Muyil area is bird watching with a certified guide.
It is also possible to combine this activity with a visit to the archaeological site and a boat trip in the lagoon.
The price will be a bit higher but you can do everything in one day.
